Overview of ZEISS DTI 3/35

Taking the Zeiss DTI 3/35 in your hand immediately gives you a high-quality feel. The rubber coating provides a non-slip grip. The device has a conical design and fits nicely on both hands, an advantage not to be underestimated in the field. Especially since the buttons are not lined up next to each other in a row.

Even in absolute darkness, it is virtually impossible to confuse the buttons. You won’t even need to remember their positions, because it’s easy to feel the difference. The front button turns the device on or activates standby mode. The record button is round and is located directly in front of the left and right buttons, which are used to control zoom in 0.5x increments or to navigate the menu. The menu can be accessed by holding down the last button.

ZEISS DTI 3/35 is equipped with a large LCOS display. It has a resolution of 1280 x 960 pixels and an image refresh rate of 50 Hertz. The image is sharp and pleasant to look at, even for long periods of time.

When you don’t want to simply observe with the DTI instead of chasing or shooting, you can wear it with the included shoulder strap. Because it is attached in two places, it does not swing annoyingly back and forth across your chest. A faint green light indicates whether the camera is running or in standby mode. A red light indicates that the battery is low.

The battery

The device does not turn off automatically. The rechargeable battery is not replaceable. At least it lasts up to seven hours depending on the temperature, which is significantly longer than other thermal imaging devices in this class. You may be able to go out three times on a charge without running out of power, but it is always advisable to recharge to avoid nasty surprises.

You turn on ZEISS DTI 3/35 by holding down the power button. It takes 11 seconds for the camera to be fully functional. A short press of the button puts the camera in standby mode, and after another short press, it is immediately reset. This means that it makes sense to keep the camera in standby mode when you are in the field so that you can react quickly to noise or movement. You don’t have to worry about the battery; it will easily last in standby mode during a long hunt. The thermal imaging camera calibrates automatically. This is the “click” you might hear during use. The calibration process takes less than half a second and occurs very rarely. The noise is extremely quiet, and the function can be set to manual mode in the menu if necessary. However, it is not very practical.

The sensor

The heart of the DTI is the sensor with a resolution of 384 x 288 pixels. There is definitely room for improvement in the future (mainly due to technological progress), but in the price range of the DTI, the sensor is top of the line. Incidentally, a thermal camera’s software can still extract a lot from its sensor. So I think we can expect to see a further increase in the already impressive image quality through regular updates from the manufacturer.

The DTI has a basic optical magnification of 2.5x with a field of view of 19 meters at a distance of 100 meters. I think this makes the DTI a good compromise between hunting in the field and in the forest. Comfortable viewing over long distances is possible. The range is also specified beyond 1000 meters. Such distances only rarely play a role in hunting, which is why I will not discuss this in more detail. In any case, identifying deer at 300 meters and distinguishing them from other game species is not a problem. Regarding image quality, however, I would like the pictures at the end of the report to speak for themselves.

The advantages

The ZEISS DTI is not the cheapest camera in its segment. In return, however, it offers three main advantages over the competition

Advantage one

First, there’s the ZEISS Hunting app. It offers a variety of useful features, such as weather forecasts, a hunting journal, and the ability to digitize your hunting ground. The app also allows users to register their products and, in some cases, connect them to their smartphones. In the case of the DTI, this happens via Wi-Fi. This allows you to stream images from the DTI to a tablet or smartphone. This feature will likely be very useful when scouting from a vehicle or selecting game at night. It allows everyone in the vehicle to follow the action. Additionally, captured images or videos can be easily downloaded from the DTI to your smartphone via the app. The great thing is that the file sizes are very small due to the sensor’s resolution, so they don’t fill up your phone’s memory.

Advantage two

Benefit number two is that ZEISS offers a full two-year warranty on the thermal imaging camera, and if you register it within four weeks of purchase, you also get an additional one-year warranty. You heard that right: a three-year warranty! For the entire thermal imaging camera. In other words, it also applies to the component of a thermal imaging camera most prone to failure, the battery.

Advantage three

And if anything should ever happen, the third benefit comes into play: ZEISS’s customer service. Everyone knows that ZEISS is renowned for its excellent customer service. So if you ever damage your ITD, simply send it to the customer service center in Wetzlar or ask us to do so. Your product will not be shipped back and forth across Europe, but will be repaired by highly trained specialists in Germany.
